Life Before the War
Before the first World War, the female role was in western society was confined to a basic and domestic life. As men left their jobs to serve their country in the war overseas, women replaced them and their jobs. The outbreak of World War 1 gave women the opportunity to do more in a male dominated society. During World War 1 women kept the men going with extra ammunition, tending to them when they were sick or injured and in many senses kept the nation moving through their contributions.
Life during the War
During the War women found many jobs through out many different work forces they found jobs in transport, nursing, factories making ammunition, the Women's Royal Air Force where they worked as mechanics, the Women's Land Army where they worked on farms and shipyards. Women's contribution to the workforce rose from 24 per cent to 37 per cent.
Life after the war
For women life after the war was much different. For the millions of women who had been working outside the home the war meant that had to return home to the lives they had before. For many women there husbands or sons didn't return from the war. But for those who did have family return from war, there lives were changed forever, with many men turning to drinking and other forms of depressants to try and cope with everything that they could remember of the war.
